Georgia Southwestern State University
This four-year division of the University of Georgia system is located in Americus, and recently celebrated a century of achievement. Established in 1906 as a state Normal College, GSW counts among its alumni President and Mrs. Carter, Attorney General Griffin B. Bell, and many other important leaders and business people. Located on the campus is The Rosalynn Carter International Center for Care-giving, The International Association of Third World Studies and Development, International Center for Asian Studies, Georgia Early College Program, The Ralph Harvey Glassblowing Studio, and the Storm Dome, where student basketball and convocations are held. Deborah G. Jackson Hall, located on campus, has been the site of many concerts over the years, featuring Ike and Tina Turner, The Allman Brothers, and The Juanita Family and Friends. Jimmy Carter National Historic Site
Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Encompassing the entire town of Plains, Georgia (population 637), the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site features the Plains High School, where President and Mrs. Carter attended grammar school; the Depot Museum where President Carter announced his presidential candidacy; and the Carter Boyhood Home. Koinonia Farm
Koinonia Farms is a Christian-based farming community, located outside of Americus. Koinonia has nearly 65 years’ worth of history—Clarence Jordan, the civil rights movement, local African American history, the birth of Habitat for Humanity and other organizations, involvement in many peace and justice movements, community living, agriculture, and much more. Jimmy Carter Regional Airport
The famous aviator came to Americus in 1923 to purchase his very first airplane. Lindbergh took his first solo flight from Americus at Souther Field, now the Jimmy Carter Regional Airport. The statue is located near the campus of South Georgia Technical College, in Americus.
Pasaquan Museum and Preservation Site
St. EOM’s Pasaquan Museum and Preservation Site Located a few miles east of Buena Vista, lies one of the most important folk art sites in the United States, St. EOM’s Pasaquan. Recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places, Pasaquan remains a testament to one man’s vision, folk artist Eddie Owens Martin. Martin reconstructed his family’s 1885 farmhouse into a sprawling six-acre park full of painted masonry walls, concrete figures and characters. Providence Canyon State Park
Providence Canyon State Park, The “Little Grand Canyon” Located in the nearby town of Lumpkin, Providence Canyon is dubbed the ‘little Grand Canyon”. Considered to be one of the Seven Wonders Of The World. One of the quirkier attractions of the state park is an abandoned homestead including nearly a dozen rusty, 1950’s-era cars and trucks. Rylander Theatre
Rylander Theatre Restored 1920’s era theatre and playhouse. Fantastic example of Art Deco style architecture. Features a Moller Pipe Organ, which is a miniature version of the “Mighty Mo”, which resides in the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Offers live stage performances, movies, and tours. Georgia Rural Telephone Museum
Georgia Rural Telephone Museum Located in the nearby town of Leslie, and housed in a renovated 1920’s cotton warehouse are the largest, oldest, and rarest examples of telecommunication in the world dating from 1876 to the present; such as the early liquid transmitter from 1876, the first carrier to transmit speech, and a model of Alexander Graham Bell’s workshop.
